Mini Fieldwork Day
Coming into this fieldwork day, I was only interested in two inquiry strands, which were the relationship between identity and justice, and immigration. Unlike my counterparts, I took this time seriously in order to plan ahead for my colloquium project. When it was all said and done, I chose the strand questioning the relationship between identity and justice. The reason I chose this strand was because the issues that this strand embarked on were issues that I could personally resonate with and intended to bring about more awareness. Some of these issues are racism, segregation, immigration, and civil rights. I've noticed how there are numerous groups over history that have addressed and fought for justice over these issues, but in the end there is still a lot of work to be done in order for equality and justice to prevail. When I approach this strand, I plan on going to events involving speakers, leaders of change, and perhaps rallies. As a Latino male, I have often faced actions of discrimination and racism, and I for one don't intend to stand by and allow this to happen. In my future, I see myself advocating for the people that are victims to these injustices, since they are being prevented the opportunity to succeed and the chance to live good lives. I feel that Parker has prepared me with the knowledge I need to know about this issue, mainly from History class, where we would tackle difficult topics such as mass incarceration, slavery, affirmative action, etc. Most importantly, from personal experience, I know how it feels to live an underprivileged life, where you really learn to value the things and people around, and serves as a motivation in order to propel you to success. I've been lucky enough to go to a school like Parker and receive the education it has to offer, and my goal is to help other youth feel that same sensation. Youth are our future, and no matter what skin color, race, or ethnicity we are, we all deserve equal opportunities and the pursuit of happiness. It's something stated in our Constitution but not implemented, and as one voice I want to change things like that.
